There are over 350 species of Birds in Myanmar and some are migratory birds. Among them, over 120 species birds can be found in Moe Yun Gyi Wetland. Moeyungyi Wetland Bird Sanctuary can offer you a day trip bird watching from Yangon. It is available for November to Feruary. Moeyungyi wetland is situated in Bago Division about 70 miles north of Yangon and on the way to Yangon-Mandalay highway. It is approximately two-hour drive from Yangon.

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1: YANGON – MOEYUNGYI WETLAND (by Private A/C Car)

Enjoy your breakfast at hotel we drive out of Yangon to Moe-Yun-Gyi Wetland via high way road by private A/C car. It will take nearly 2 ½ hrs (115 Km).

On the way we stop at the Htauk Kyant the last resting place of over 6,300 Allied War Graves Cemetery which located just outside Yangon and was built in 1951 (consolidating a number of smaller cemeteries) to remember the sacrifice of 27000 soldiers from the British Commonwealth and its allies. These beautifully kept and peaceful gardens and impressive memorials are a place for quietly remembering and reflecting.

Afterwards, proceed to Moe-Yun-Gyi Wetland and check in Hotel. After refreshment, start bird-watching by a private small boat through the Moe-Yun-Gyi Wetland in the evening. We will see a variety of migrated birds such as Asian Open-Bill Storks, Yellow Wagtails, Bar-headed geese, Ruddy Shell-ducks, Black Winged Stilts and etc….. Every year, thousands of birds usually fly from the north to the south along the East Asian flyway to escape from winter. Therefore Moeyungyi Wetland is one of the best places for these birds to rest and feed in Asia. Then, back to hotel and overnight at the floating Moe-Yun-Gyi Wetland Resort.

DAY 2: MOEYUNGYI WETLAND & ENVIRON VILLAGES

After breakfast at hotel, we embark bird-watching one more again around the lake by a small boat in the morning. In the afternoon, we visit the villages near Moe-Yin-Gyi Wetland by private A/C car and take photos at rural area. In addition to bird watching, we can also observe the livelihood of local people, fauna and flora of the wetland. Then back to hotel and overnight at floating hotel in Moe-Yin-Gyi Wetland.
The best season for bird watching is from November to February every year when the birds migrate.
Note: Moe Yun Gyi Wetland is also situated on the way to Golden Rock (Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda). Therefore you can proceed to Golden Rock (Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda) for one night trip if you wish.

DAY 3: MOEYUNGYI WETLAND – BAGO – YANGON

Enjoy your breakfast at Hotel we drive back to Yangon via Bago by private A/C car. On the way we visit Bago; an ancient capital of the Mon Kingdom in 15th Century. Bago is situated only 80 km north-east of Yangon.

(1) Upon arrival Bago we visit Kyatkatwine Monastery, one of the largest monasteries in Myanmar. Thousand of monks are studying Buddhist scripture at Kyatkatwine. One of the highlights for visitors to the Kyatkatwine is lunch time when the monks would gather for their pre-noon meal (monks are not allowed to eat after noon time). So, we need to arrive there before 10:30 am to observe the lunch process of thousand of monks who take their last meal of the day at 10:30 am in total silence.

(2) Afterwards we visit Dhammazedi Pagda and Maha Kalyani Sima which is sacred hall of ordination was originally constructed in 1476 by Myanmar King Dhammazedi, the famous alchemist Myanmar king and son of Myanmar Queen Shinsawpu.
(3) The magnificent Shwe mawdaw Pagoda-said to be over 2,000 years old and ShweTharLyaung (a huge reclining Buddha); 55 meters long and dating back 994AD.
(4) “Kanbawzathardi Palace” the famous palace of King Bayinnaung (1551-1581 A.D.) is being extensively excavated and some buildings are being rebuilt.
(5) We complete the day with an extended visit to Kyaik-Pun temple which is four huge seated Buddha images in the open air. Then back to Yangon and transferred to your hotel.
